At the age of nine, I was a voracious reader. I was reading everything I could get my hands on at school and at home. This was a time in my life where I was living in Rantoul, Illinois with my family. I was the oldest of three at that time. Later the Lord was to add another little sister to my life, Sharon. She was a very precious and delicate little lady who I love very much. She was tiny when she came home from the hospital. I remember her first Christmas because of what I am about to relate to you. I viewed her as someone who had just came to us from the realm of the spirit. She was a link back to that world for me. Since this time in my life, she has been special to me. One day I ran out of things to read at home. I was wanting something to read and there before me was a large family Bible. My parents had purchased it from a door-to-door salesperson. I picked it up and fanned the pages and I stopped at the center grouping of all the beautiful prints of many famous religious oil paintings and frescos that were recorded inside its covers. The beauty and story of each print created a real hunger in me. I satisfied that hunger by spending time in that bible reading the stories behind these great paintings. As I read the Bible, I immediately saw it as a history of generations with the same God dealing with each succeeding generation. I knew that ‘Job” was from an early generation who walked with God. I read about Abraham of Ur, and how he was promised, by God to be a father to a future nation. I also read in the magazines of the day about archeological excavations that were being made into an ancient city known as Ur of the Chaldeans. I saw Ur as a real city. To me this was a confirmation to the Bible and I accepted it immediately. As I read the bible I began to see a specific style to the Lord’s comments to people he was involved with. I also noticed a strict adherence to a code of ethics by God. I knew God had an ethics code and that he stuck to it from generation to generation, no matter what it cost HIM. I liked this God. He was so firm, yet so very real in his dealings with people. I was amazed how he let Abraham’s wife give the exit verdict to their son of her slave. He backed up her decision and allowed the son and mother to wander away from the family and a bright future. Yet in amazement, I saw this same God send an angel to bring water and spare the child’s life to become a leader of a great people who exist even to this day. As I pondered all this at nine or so, I had the following experience. One cold winter’s night in my bedroom, on the top bunk of our bunk bed set. While my little brother was asleep on the bottom bunk, I had a vision where I was fast asleep and then suddenly I awoke in the middle of the night. I awoke to a loud sound coming from the outside yard area of our home. I could tell it was just on the other side of the wall. As I rubbed my sleepy eyes I noticed a rather large hole in our wall and I could see two large armies standing on a great plain just outside my wall. They were opposite of each other and faced off ready to engage. On my left was a large ruthless mob. They were extremely fierce and nasty looking. Somehow I knew this mob was terrible and very ferocious. It was very confident they acted as if they were used to causing their enemies to become so fearful when they confronted them that they would submit immediately. Directly across from them was a large and extremely disciplined army all arrayed in very straight lines. This army was all in bright shiny white clothing. They were dressed very similar to the Roman soldiers I had read about and seen in the Bible pictures. They were alike except for their shirts were too long. Their shirts were like robes because they were long enough to go past their knees and almost to their ankles. They did wear large belts around those long shirts. Their shields were large and very shinny like an aircraft’s unpainted and polished aluminum hull. The sounds the mob army made was terrifying to me. The other White army was so silent. It was eerie to see the wall of noise from one army and a wall of silence from the other. Suddenly the white army raised their swords above their heads and gave out a great shout that roared above the terrifying sounds of the mob army. That yell shut up the mob army for just a moment. As I listened to that yell it went out over the mob army and then it traveled through the hole in my wall and buried itself deep into my chest. I remember feeling it physically hitting me. My next thought was that it was going to kill me. It was a great sound with great power behind it. As I took my next breath, I found out that it did not kill me. It actually made me feel great. Suddenly it came to me that ‘I knew where I belonged’. I was a member of the White and shiny army. I had been afraid at first that I was destined for the black ferocious mob. But that fear passed as the shout settled into my chest to stay there even until this very moment of my adult life. It is still there, I can still hear it. Suddenly the hole in the wall disappeared and I was there in my bed awake and thinking about what I had just happened to me. Was all this real? Was it a dream or what? I now know it was an introduction to my membership into that great spiritual battle among the living on this planet. As I laid there in the dark, I could hear my little brother breathing. I fell asleep knowing which army I was destined to join. |
